Effectiveness of Automatic Sentence Structure Analysis in Chinese Comprehension

I will present “Effectiveness of Automatic Sentence Structure Analysis in Chinese Comprehension” with my cooperator, tomorrow afternoon at 2011 International Conference on “Chinese Textbook and New Teaching Resources” in New York City.

The abstract is bellow.

Since Chinese is written without any segmentation, i.e., white-spaces between words, novice learners of Chinese language often find difficulties in understanding sentence structure, or even in spotting words and phrases and looking them up in dictionaries. In this paper we propose a computer-aided Chinese reading comprehension support tool which makes the most of automatic language techniques, especially, segmentation of words and sentence structure analysis. The tool automatically shows large noun / verb chunks in sentences separately, and shows the internal word segmentation. The preliminary subjective tests show that the tool could fasten and enhance learners’ comprehension in Chinese.
